Compass and the never ending competition

06.15.09 | 1 Comment

I was flicking through the Compass website to see what supposedly grassroots types thought of their conference at the weekend, and I saw the following from a Tony Praill (whose name I remember from somewhere but can’t place):

‘What happened to the ‘radical’ howtoliveinthe21stcentury Compass initiative…..results to be announced at the No Turning Back conference? Is this another failed piss up at a brewery or did something actually happen with this? ‘

And then I remembered that I had entered said competition, and am now due to win the lobbying support of Compass for my completely brilliant proposal for the renewal of democracy in the UK, written, I might add, some months before the MP expenses scandal broke, and before it became commonplace to call for root and branch reform of political parties.  I am just soooo prescient.

I looked on the Howtoliveinthe21stcentury website - there was nothing other than the confirmation that, as Tony said, the winners would be announced at the conference.  Then I looked around the Compass website, but there was no mention at all of the policy competition.

So when is my victory going to be announced, I wonder?  Like Tony, I’m not exactly holding my breath, because this radical new competition has been delayed month after month after month, there is no evidence that the impressive ‘panel of experts’ has ever actually looked at the hundred of proposals loads of activists like me spent ages putting together, and in fact the whole thing appears to have been quietly forgotten.

And this is a leading Centre-Left think tank that’s supposed to lead us to a ‘new politics’?

The best get out Compass has now from this horrible mess, where it has abused the trust and energies of hundreds of its own members and other interested parties (e.g. me) is to award me the big prize immediately. If they do, I promise not to tell anyone they buggered up big time.
